Case study: Art expression as a guide to music therapy

Abstract: Describes the use of music therapy in the case of a 14-yr-old institutionalized autistic girl. The child, whose verbal expression was limited, was willing to communicate through drawing, thus giving her therapist information on her feelings, likes, and dislikes. Music sessions mediated by drawing helped the girl to lengthen her attention span, modify compulsive drawing habits, broaden the range of her feelings, and gain a firmer hold on reality.
