Art therapy and group process |
Journal/Book: Art Psychotherapy. 1977; 4: 5-9.
Abstract: Discusses the use in art therapy of having murals painted by groups. This approach is derived from the insights of psychoanalysis, Gestalt psychology, philosophy, and projective psychological tests. Its working hypothesis is that the group mural represents a microcosm of the group as it functions within itself and in the larger society. 10 aspects of murals are described, from formal features and structure to content and dynamic meanings, and to interpersonal and social components. Systematic studies in this area have just begun, and research is needed on the effect of different types of instructions and leaders, the relative value of structured and unstructured sessions, whether groups of homogeneous personality types work better than heterogeneous ones.
