The use of music in counseling and psychotherapy |
Journal/Book: Individual Psychologist. 1977; 14: 45-50.
Abstract: In accord with the views of R. Dreikurs (1953), communication through music within the context of therapy is advocated to go beyond barriers and defenses between client and therapist or counselor. It also sets a more constructive emotional mood. The therapist can introduce music into the sessions by (a) having instruments available in the room, (b) giving an example by playing or encouraging the client to play, and (c) appreciating the music by seeking a meditative nonjudgmental state. The therapeutic value of music is illustrated by a case history. These procedures are also applicable to child therapy. (5 ref)
