Nontraditional guitar techniques for the educable and trainable mentally retarded residents in music therapy activities |
Journal/Book: Journal of Music Therapy. 1977; 14: 39-42.
Abstract: Describes 2 guitar methods, devised for use with the mentally retarded residents of Belle Chasse State School. The Unichord Tuning Method (UCT) was designed for use by educable retardates who possess the thumb and finger grasp necessary for forming finger positions but are unable to master traditional guitar finger positions. This method was also used with psychiatric patients. This Multichord Tuning Method (MCT) was devised for trainable retardates who do not possess the thumb and finger grasp necessary for forming finger positions. Of 14 patients, 4 were successfully taught by the UCT and 10 by the MCT.
