Treatment of a transplantable hypophyseal tumor in rats with PHRIGILLANTHUS TETRANDRUS acquous extract

Abstract: AxC strain female rats were subcutaneously innoculated with atransplantable, functional hypophyseal tumor. The eventual therapeuticproperties of the acqeuous extract of Phrigillanthus tetrandrus weretested on these animals, since Phrigillanthus tetrandrus belongs to thesame family as Viscum album, a vegetal parasite for which severalauthors have described carcinostatic as well as toxic properties. Forevaluation of the treatment, the following parameters were chosen:tumoral volume (growth), survival time, cellular density of the tumor,mitotic index of the same tumoral tissue and malignancy. The results areanalyzed and discussed regarding each of these biologic parameters.Although no statistically conclusive evidence can be drawn from thispreliminary work, it is postulated that the treatment was successful inarresting the malignancy of the tumor.COPYRIGHT BY Elsevier Science BV, Amsterdam, Netherlands END OF DOCUMENT
