Abstract: Significance tests are the most often used statistical procedures in medicine. In this paper, significance tests are studied critically with respect to the value of the information they yield, and to their appropriateness in most practical situations. It is demonstrated that these tests are suited only to very specialized questions, which are seldom actually encountered in applied problems. Moreover, significance tests are not rationally supportable as decision-making procedures. Other types of question formulation and related statistical methods are discussed.
