Abstract: We define here tonal melodies and spectral melodies: For sounds containing only octaves, the former correspond to fundamental frequency variations and the latter to spectral envelope variations. In this paper we give statistical results of judgements showing that tonal melodies are better perceived by the right ear. Conversely the left ear is more able to recognize spectral melodies.
