Image and art therapy |
Journal/Book: Art Psychotherapy. 1973; 1: 169-176.
Abstract: Emphasizes the analysis and meaning of images rather than verbal communication in art therapy. The image contains a variety of advantages over words alone for self-understanding and therapy. There is a circular process, a shift from a logical to an illogical state and back again in which pictorial expresssion leads to unexpected directions and has a liberating effect. The drawing process in itself helps establish a relationship. A complex scale is presented for the analysis of technique, structure, processes, cognition, associations, perceptions, and drives. A number of recommendations are made for the therapeutic and diagnostic applications of this approach.
