Abstract: THE CONCEPT THAT SPACE is the formative matrix which gestates matter is both ancient and widespread. Thus, by Wu Taoists meant no-knowledge, or sageknowledge. This ineffable Wu, shapeless and timeless, underlies events and qualities, and, being the essence of nature, provides a way by which man can leave himself and live in nature. Lao Tzu, in Witter Bynner's transversion, described it thus:Existence is beyond the power of words To define:Terms may be used But are none of them absolute. In the beginning of heaven and earth there were no words, Words came out of the womb of matter; And whether a man dispassionately Sees to the core of life Or passionately Sees the surface. The core and the surface. Are essentially the same, Words making them seem different Only to express appearance. lf name be needed, wonder names them both: From wonder into wonder Existence opens. The Vedas echo this concern with a super-real which animates sensate reality, in the concept of Akâsa or Ether, which underlies and determines space:"What is the origin of this world?" "Ether.... for all these beings take their rise from the ether only, and return into the ether. Ether is greater than these, ether is their rest.
