The Musical Symbol. A Study of the Philosophic Theory of Music

Abstract: An investigation of the problems of musical meaning with a chronological presentations of the musical theories of Schopenhauer, Nietszche, Hanslick, Gurney ans Langer.. Includes relevant theories of painting, poetry and philosophy. The second part of the book is a broad outline of a comprehensive theory of music which suggests yardstics for historical and stylistic analysis and offers a basis for intelligent listening and cogent musical criticism. Teh symboloc character is suggested as the common factor characteristic of all music to some degree. The final chapters of the book is a development of the author's theory of the musical symbol(the morphology of musical symbol) - presented as the concept of an intelligible but nondiscursive mode of aural apprehension.
