The Use of a Metabolic Scale

Summary A metabolic scale has been used to determine weight changes in several groups of individuals. Ten normal volunteers were measured and exhibited an average weight loss of 45 gm/hr. Preliminary studies have shown real diurnal changes in insensible water loss. In representative patients water loss is shown to be occasionally far beyond the losses which would be normally predicted for these patients. The subject of vaporizational heat loss is significant and important in the care of seriously ill patients. ___MH
