Abstract: Alexander Goetz Ph.D Consultant to National Center for Atmospheric Research Boulder Colorado Particularly fortunate circumstances rendered it possible for the first time to follow Vince Schaeferīs invitations of the past years for participating in the 4th ASRC Yellowstone Field Research Expedition (January 21 - 28 1964). The time was of course too short-especially for a novice to this sort of environment-to activate a systematic program but it proved sufficient to explore certain most interesting phenomaena which apparently have not been looked at in the past. They concern the origin substance and density of aerocolloidal particulates (aerosols) in the air layer above an untouched snow surface. Past studies with the aerosol spectrometer and a special impactor technique (cf.) have shown that many natural surface types such as the ocean soil vegetation etc. carry relatively large numbers of submicron particulates in a stagnant air layer which contacts these surfaces This mode of tracing such aerocolloids has to our knowledge not been applied to snow surfaces at subfreezing temperatures in contact with unpolluted air masses For this reason the opportunity to explore this type of interaction under the conditions prevailing at Yellowstone appeared particularly promising. ... ___MH
