Journal/Book: Reprinted from Nature Vol. 204 No. 4957 pp. 489-490 1964. 1964;

Abstract: Department of Oral Medicine and Pathology London Hospital Medical College London E.1. The inclusion of 1 mg of fluoride per g of paste in a stannous fluoride dentifrice has led to the suggestion that chronic fluoride poisoning could arise during the prolonged use of such a preparation. Although it can be calculated that systemic fluorosis will not follow even the most abnormal use of a stannous fluoride paste this conclusion is as yet supported by only scanty experimental evidente. To estimate the amount of fluoride retained in the body after the use of a sodium fluoride dentifrice1 and various simplified fluoride dentifrices2 the fluoride recovered from the toothbrush and rinsing water has been determined chemically1 and by the use of radioactive fluorine2. In addition urine excretion of fluoride has been estimated in children3 4 and in adults5 who were using a commercially available fluoride dentifrice but data an the ingestion and excretion of fluoride after using a single brushful of a proprietary stannous fluoride dentifrice are lacking. This Information has been obtained in the following experiment. . . .
