Summary There is considerable difference of opinion regarding the physiologic effect of ultrasound in its clinical application. The thermal effect of ultrasound differs vastly from that developed during other heat treatments. The mechanical and chemical effects are widely recognized. Much of the beneficial effects of the modalities used in Physical Medicine are obtained by a combined neural-endocrine-humoral mechanism. Ultrasound is no exception. Its segmental application and its combination with other modalities especially the low volt current is of great clinical value. Zusammenfassung Die Ansichten über die physiologische Wirkung der Ultraschallbehandlung sind sehr verschieden. Der durch Ultraschall hervorgerufene Wärmeeffekt unterscheidet sich grundlegend von dem anderer Hitzebehandlungen. Der mechanische und chemische Effekt ist allgemein anerkannt. Die günstige Wirkung physikalisch -therapeutischer Methoden läßt sich durch einen kombinierten neural endocrinen - humoralen Mechanismus erklären. Ultraschall macht hier keine Ausnahme. Die segmentale Anwendung des Ultraschalls und seine Kombination mit anderen Methoden vor allem den niederfrequenten Strömen ist klinisch außerordentlich wertvoll. schö
