Compliance of the Lungs and Thorax in Poliomyelitis

Journal/Book: Reprinted from JOURNAL OF APPLIED PHYSIOLOGY Vol. 7 No. 4 January 1955 S. 375 - 378. 1955;

Abstract: R. M. CHERNIACK J. D. ADAMSON AND J. A. HILDES. From the Department of Physiology and Medical Research University of Manitoba and the Winnipeg Municipal Hospitals Winnipeg Manitoba Canada SUMMARY The compliance of the lungs and thorax of 20 poliomyelitis patients with paralysis of varying severity and of 4 normal subjects was determined by measuring the lung volume response to a series of transient and sustained pressures in a tank respirator. The sustained pressure technique resulted in higher values for compliance of the lungs and thorax and is therefore considered a better measurement. The results confirmed those of Affeldt et al. (I) that the compliance of lungs and thorax is reduced in poliomyelitis the reduction in compliance correlating roughly with the decrease in vital capacity. We are grateful to Dr. A. L. Barach Columbia University for the exsufflator with which the sustained pressures were achieved. We are also indebted to the Crippled Children's Society of Manitoba for financial assistance. schö
