The Relationship between Musicality and the Influence of Music on Typewriting Scores |
Abstract: This study attempted to discover whether a relationship exists between musicality and the effects of music on typewriting scores. Musicality is dependent upon the awareness of tonal-rhythmic patterns and upon interest, attitude, and background in music. Evidence was found that the effect of background music on typing performance is related te musicality. The evidence is most significant when musicality is measured in terms of attitudes, interests, and background of the subjects. Significant evidence was also found that background music can reduse errors in typing. Background music significantly improved the gross speed typing scores on the five minute speed tests of musical students more than it did the gross speed of less musical students when musicality was measured by interests, attitudes, and background in music. In all other comparisons no significant improvement of musical students over nonmusical students was apparent. However, in all comparisons musical students improved while music was played; in three out of six comparisons, nonmusical students showed decreases in scores while music was played. High and low groups of both musicality distributions improved in error scores with music. Low groups in both showed decreases in average gross speed with music.
