Why Mozart and not Salieri

Journal/Book: Creativity Res J. 1999; 12: 10 Industrial Ave, Mahwah, NJ 07430-2262, USA. Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc Inc. 67-76.

Abstract: Why is Mozart considered the great creator, and not his contemporary composer Salieri, who worked in the same city of Vienna and who breathed the same European musical air? An answer to this question, which goes to the root of sustained creativity, is presented by the GAM/DP theory of creativity in which G stands for genetic endowment, A for assistances of youth, M for misfortunes of youth, and DP for division of power. Mozart was rich in G, in A, and ill M. This condition gives origin to the challenged personality, high in sustained creativity. Salieri, however, although long in M was short in A. This combination is associated with the different personality, low in sustained creativity. Both Mozart and Salieri profited by living in a climate of growing division of power, even if Mozart profited from it more, thanks to his high G x A x M.
