Immunologic disorders of the inner ear

Abstract: Dizziness and hearing loss can be very frightening to patients,family, and friends. In trying to explain these symptoms, reserachers have identified a series of inner ear problems that are felt to be the result of an immunologic disorder The immune system is responsible for protecting the body from not only external pathogens but also from itself. When a problem develops within the system, the system can attack itself Tis is referred to as an autoimmune disease. Immune inner ear disease represents a series of immune system mediated problems that can present with hearing loss, dizziness, or both. The etiology, presentation, testing, and treatment of primary immune inner ear disease will be discussed. A review of secondary immune inner ear diseases is presented for comparison.
