Treatment of hand and wrist pain: a randomized clinical mal of high voltage pulsed direct current built into a wrist spint - Deutsche Gesellschaft für Physikalische Medizin und Rehabilitation 103. Kongreß 30.9.-4.10.1998 Hannover

Journal/Book: Phys Rehab Kur Med 8 (1998) 162. 1998;

Abstract: Sixty individuals who performed repetitive data processing were blindly randomized into two groups: group 1 clients were given Smart Brate wrist splints incorporating energized high-volt units and group 2 clients were given identical splints but with nonenergized units. Each employee received daily treatment at the work-site consisting of 30-minute sessions and totaling 20 treatments during a 30-day period. Pre-treatment and post-treatment measurements were obtained using a dynamometer for grip strength Nervepace testing visual analogs for pain scale volumetric measurements for edema repetitive task testing and Semmes-Weinstein monofilament sensory testing. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference between pre- and post-treatment values for the energized group. Paired T-test was used to indicate any difference between pre-treatment and post-treatment values for both groups (p < 0.05). The mean amount of Stimulation required in the energized group was reduced post-treatment to stimulate the median nerve. There was no significant difference between pre- and post-treatment in amount of Stimulation in the non-energized group. The volumetric difference in the energized group was statistically with lower post value than the pre value. Again the non-energized group showed no significant difference. The energized group also showed significantly improved repetitive task time in the activity. The non-energized group did not statistically show an improved time differential. Non-parametric differences were founding pre- and post-testing with the Semmes-Weinstein monofilament testing in the energized group. The visual analog scale also revealed in the energized group that both pain rating and the symptoms had substantially decreased. Director of Physical Therapy Susan W.
