Winter deafness: A case study of a profoundly deaf child's additional hearing disability

Journal/Book: Deaf Educ. 1998; 22: C/O G F E Clark, 2 Gaters Gardens, Sandford, Crediton, England EX17 4LU. British Assoc Teachers Deaf. 3-9.

Abstract: Over a period of two winters it was noticed that a number of tile most severely and profoundly deaf children in a school for deaf children complained that their hearing aids (individual and group) were 'too quiet' or 'not working'. These children had Mo obvious middle ear problem but when their aids were checked, no fault was found. Full audiological checks were therefore carried out. It is suggested that slight changes in middle ear pressure can have a noticeable effect on the hearing capacity of profoundly deaf children (Tate, 1997). A case study of one of these children is presented here and the results are compared with those of the full population of secondary aged profoundly deaf children without significant other handicaps in this school over the winter of 1996/1997.
