Musikkterapi som estetisk praksis: Noen refleksjoner omkring musikk- og handlingsbegreber

Journal/Book: Nordic Journal of Music Therapy. 1998; 7:

Abstract: The subject of this article is concepts of music and action in improvisation therapy and in the method Guided Imagery and Music. Starting with these two directions in contemporary music therapy, the author attempts to demonstrate the necessity for music therapists of dealing with the expressive as well as the historic dimensions in symbolic forms. A point of departure for the article is that music is a symbolic form and that music therapy in a fundamental way is an interpretative practice. In this way, music therapy as an interpretative practice must seek theoretical support in hermeneutical reflection. The last part of the article discusses aesthetical dimensions in music therapeutical practice. using the concept of play, the author relates the discussion to a performative concept of aesthetics A central issue is how to show that the concept of play includes both imaginary and realistic aspects of signs. Thorugh the method of Guided Imagery and Music, music therapy is linked to music as symbolic form. Seeing music therapy as an exploratory process, the author argues that the symbolic in music both constructs and deconstructs meaning. In this area between music therapy as historic-reflective, as well as contemporary and expressive, the author suggests an aesthetic/performative methodology. Thorugh such a performative aesthetic, the author attempts to demonstrate the necessity for music therapists of dealing with the expressive as well as the reflective in symbolic forms.
