Borderline structure and dissociability of the psyche

Journal/Book: Anal Psychol. 1998; 29: Allschwilerstrasse 10, CH-4009 Basel, Switzerland. Karger. 159-185.

Abstract: The article is based on the strange and yet unmistakable kinship between the unique emotional conditions of a borderline disturbance and the main psychological ideas of analytical psychology. This kinship will be spelled out and interpreted in terms of Jung's psychology, whose unique contribution consists of its theoretical and therapeutic proximity to a layer of emotional being that is not (yet) organized according to the principles of ego-gravitation and personal demarcation. The special access of Jungian psychology to ego-transcendent and deficient emotional conditions consists, however, less in a technical position than in an inner disposition. Jung's direct and implicit descriptions of the mercurial-medial role of the therapist in the curative relational process suggest a therapeutic agent that is essentially different from instrumental treatment by interpretation as well as 'the answer' (Prinzip Antwort) and yet until now has not been recognized as such. The medial presence of the therapist is of particular importance in the treatment of borderline as well as other personality disturbances.
