Ayurveda in Deutschland - die historische Perspektive

Abstract: Ayurveda, literally translated "Science of Life" developed on the Indian subcontinent in a long continuous Tradition. Beginning with the great three authors Caraka, Susruta and Vagbhata (between 1st and 7th century A. D.) a voluminous scientific literature of syurveda was created documenting an ever living science. A short summary of the historical development of Ayurvedic Tradition is presented here. In present-day India Ayurveda is one medical system among others. In the late seventies Ayurveda started to be propagated under the name of "Maharishi Ayurveda" in the western world. "Maharishi Ayurveda" is characterised by strong sectarian beliefs and differs distinctly from the living Tradition of Ayurveda. In the interest of suffering patients of our days it is important to practise Ayurveda in close contact with its living Tradition, adapting Ayurvedic concepts according to region and times.
