Abstract: The term "lower plants" can easily lead to the idea, that these plants are primitive organisms, which is not true at all. These groups of organisms which are manifold and rich in genuses and species, provide valuable raw materials for nutrition and are also very interesting from the medical and pharmaceutical point of view. In the first part of this article we deal with the different groups of algae, from the simply structured blue-green algae up to the green algae and highly developed red algae, which are rich in forms.
