Abstract: Several large-scale human intervention studies demonstrate that selenium supplementation is an effective strategy for cancer prevention. Selenium possesses anticarcinogenic as well as antiviral properties. Both properties may now be discussed from the same mechanistic viewpoint since the presence of nucleotide sequences for the biosynthesis of selenoproteins was demonstrated in the genomes of several retroviral agents. Selenium is also increasingly used to prevent recurrences in treated cancer patients and in cancer therapy.
