Abstract: Inadequacies in object-relations theory become apparent when one attempts to use them to enhance understanding of self-referential affects, notably shame. Proceeding from a discussion of this affect, the author proposes a new ''theory of alterity,'' illustrating his approach with reference to three mythological figures: Narcissus, Tiresias, and Oedipus.
