Cognitive therapy, constructivism, and dreams: A critical review

Journal/Book: J Constr Psychol. 1997; 10: 1900 Frost Road, Suite 101, Bristol, PA 19007-1598. Taylor & Francis. 249-273.

Abstract: This article examines the long-standing, albeit sometimes tenuous, relationship between the dream phenomenon and the cognitive therapy tradition. If argues that A. T. Beck used psychoanalytic approaches to the dream as a launching pad from which to form the rudiments of his new cognitive therapy, but that he encountered theoretical and practical difficulties that ultimately made further exploration of the dream phenomenon within the burgeoning cognitive therapy movement less attractive. Recent constructivist approaches to cognitive therapy, however, are offering solutions to some of A. T. Beck's theoretical dilemmas, and as such are providing new roads for theoretical, experimental, and clinical exploration of the dream phenomenon within a constructivist cognitive therapy context.
