Towards better listening and learning in the classroom

Abstract: This paper considers the adverse effects of typical classroom listening conditions on teaching and learning. It examines the effects of environmental acoustic problems on children in the mainstream classroom, including specific populations considered to be at risk for educational underachievement. A rationale for optimising classroom listening for all children is outlined and ways of achieving this goal are suggested. The potential of sound field classroom amplification to improve listening conditions is explored and further research needs are defined.
