Individualisation theory in youth sociology: An overview

Journal/Book: Sociologia. 1997; 29: PO Box 57, Nam Slobody 6, 810 05 Bratislava, Slovakia. Slovak Academic Press Ltd. 249-257.

Abstract: There are several unanswered issues before youth research in Europe which are also formulated in relation to the youth policy of European countries. It is not by accident that the links between risk, stress and problem behaviour are studied. Some issues of the future youth research appeal also in the countries transforming their political and economic systems, For example, which personal and social risk factors in adolescence do intensify, how far are observable changes in the social structuration of the youth life phase in the generations that face intensified risks, and which particular groups are affected by such developments and in which ways. The trend towards individualisation in modem Western society, but also a partial subversion of traditional class differences by ascriptive statutes and traditional life styles, emerges in transforming European societies, too. Individual achievements get an growing importance and diversification and individualisation of life style emerges only where preconditions have arisen due to modernisation (industrialisation, urbanisation, information technology, deconsecration).
