The integration of the mind and brain into the practice of psychiatry: An uncompleted task

Abstract: In the history of science we find a dualism between mind and brain. In the 20th century the two important revolutions in the fields of psychoanalysis and biology gave important contributions to psychiatric understanding. The need for meaningful integration Is Increasingly apparent. The author shows the entanglement of the two areas up to the level of genoms and personal meaning. He concludes that a true integration of developmental neurobiology and psychology into clinical psychiatry is not possible at this time. He emphasizes the demand for the psychiatrist to maintain a broad mastery of both psychological and biological understanding in a way that captures and approximates more perfectly the human organism.
