Agreement of patients' and nurses' perceptions of burn pain: A research review

Journal/Book: Online J Knowledge Synth Nurs. 1997; 4: 550 W North Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202. Sigma Theta Tau Int. U3-U8.

Abstract: (1) The purpose of this study was to review all available research studies that reported the level of agreement between patients' and nurses' perceptions of burn pain. Findings from the eight studies included in this review varied, however, overall nurses appeared to be inclined to overestimate or underestimate patients' burn pain rather than rate patients' pain in accordance with patients' ratings. Possible factors that may have influenced the discrepancies in patients' and nurses' burn pain ratings and critiques of the eight research reports are discussed. Practice implications and recommendations for future research are provided.
