Abstract: This article reviews the basic premises, indications, and technical aspects that define child psychoanalysis. A critical examination of the theory and practice of child analysis suggests the need to investigate which child analytic techniques may be effective for different types of clinical or developmental disturbances. Drawing on empiric and clinical studies, the authors propose that the central therapeutic feature of child analysis is its capacity to promote children's ability to mentalize. A more specific definition of mentalization-enhancing approaches brings child psychoanalysis closer to contemporary developmental research and empirically supported therapies. It also appears to provide a more effective therapeutic approach for a range of clinical disturbances that are not generally regarded as appropriate indications for psychoanalysis.
