The subjective importance of being religious and its effect on health and morale 14 years later

Journal/Book: J Aging Stud. 1997; 11: 55 Old Post RD-#2, PO Box 1678, Greenwich, CT 06836-1678. Jai Press Inc. 131-141.

Abstract: Longitudinal data were used to examine whether the subjective importance attached to being a religious person influenced health or psychological well-being 14 years later. About two-thirds of the panel reported consistently positive attitudes tow ard being religious throughout the study; about 16 percent were consistently negative in terms of the importance of being religious. In regression analyses, 1977 rating of the importance of being religious had no predictive value in understanding variation in health or psychological well-being in 1991. Religious affiliation and frequency of amending religious functions were also unrelated to health or psychological well-being. These results call into question conclusions of earlier reviews of the literature.
