The authorŐs narrative style allows the reader to get to know the group members as individuals and to gain an understanding of their experiences. Includes musical transcriptions of improvised songs, interviews, and detailed session descriptions. Details how the improvisational essence of Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy is applied by contemporary practitioners in group settings. Important findings support the benefit of an interactional, process-oriented clinical approach to developmentally-delayed individuals. Describes the chain of events following these gains in the area of self-expression including challenges to the leadership, intra-group conflict, and enhanced intimacy among members, a progression typically associated with more fully functioning individuals. Includes a detailed study of the group process, an analysis of a variety of the clinical uses of music, and a discussion of the research method including the choice of narrative structures.
