Echinacea - pharmaceutical quality and therapeutical value

Abstract: In a workshop on "Echinacea" organized by the International Society for Medicinal Plant Research and the Austrian Society of Phytotherapy in Vienna, the state of the art in Echinacea research was presented. In eight review lectures the following topics were covered: cultivation and production technology of Echinacea species, low molecular weight constituents and their analysis, Echinacea polysaccharides and their immunological activity, investigations on the pharmakodynamic properties of Echinacea root extracts, new perspectives in the mode of action of Echinacea purpurea, controlled clinical trials with Echinacea containing drugs, Echinacea in cancer treatment, and use of Echinacea in the general practice. The content of the lectures is summarized in brief form.
