Abstract: The market of herbal medicines and the phytopharmaceutical industry in the USA have changed considerably in the last decades. Today herabal medicine is offered by a large number of different types of retailers. This includes, for example, natural food stores, the mass merchandisers, supermarkets, mail order retailers, and the shops of various ethnic groups. It is essential to understand that herbal products may not be sold making medical claims. Only a relatively small proportion of the herbal medicines is offered as standardized extracts. In the article the most important herbal medicines of the USA, the development of the market based on selected sales figures, data on the export and import, and some data on the buyers of herbal medicines are presented. Additionally, a specific subgroup of the market - the one of traditional Chinese medicines - is discussed.
