Phytotherapy of cardiac insufficiency

Abstract: Regarding the high demand and the demands of the patients for effective and safe herbal drugs as an alternative to chemical-synthetic drugs for the treatment of cardiac diseases, the outcome of trials is not sufficient. Up to now no drugs for the treatment of cardiac rhythm disturbances, coronary heart disease and acute cardiac insufficiency are available. The situation is different with chronic cardiac insufficiency. Because of the small therapeutical range of cardiac glycosides only defined herbal extracts should be used, which exhibit a sufficiently high bioavailability, well-known pharmacokinetic data making the control of plasma drug levels in the context of therapeutical adjustment and registration of toxic plasma levels possible. For two special extracts from leaves plus flowers of Crataegus sufficient experimental and clinical data concerning the efficacy profile, the mechanism of action and the clinical effects are available, justifying the indication cardiac insufficiency NYHA II.
