Die Bedeutung der Proteinqualität für die Ernährung der Nerven

Abstract: The nerves create a bridge between physical processes and psychological feelings, and to a great extent their condition determines our subjective well-being as well as our physical and mental capability. As a result of the progressive restructuring taking place in the working world, the nerves are being subjected to more and more stress. What demands does this place on us regarding the nutrition of nerves, and what symptoms occur if the nerves are insufficiently nourished?Although there is only a slight rise in energy consumption when the nerves are placed under increasing strain, but there is a marked increase in protein consumption and N-excretion. In the nerves, minerals, amino acids and their transformation products, and peptides function as neurotransmitters. For instance, tyrosine and phenylalanine are both starting materials for catecholamines, tryptophane for serotonine and melatonin, serine and cystein for acetylcholine, and arginine for the production of nitric oxide. Vitamins are essential for the metabolism of the amino acids.Loss of concentration might not only be due to glycopenia, but may also be caused by amino acids or vitamin deficiency. A major role is played by essential and semiessential amino acids in particular, which must be ingested with food. A deficiency of these amino acids, or of neurotransmitters, leads, among other things, to a drop in performance, cerebral dysfunction, ill humor and irritability, nervosity, depression, hallucinations. Emotional defects and disorders are accompanied by irregularities in the amine balance. Overworking the nerves and suffering emotional stress can cause an increase in consumption, while impaired digestion can lead to reduced amounts being ingested.The rapid onset of fatigue, reduced powers of comprehension, physical exhaustion and frequently occuring feelings of depression can all be indications of amino acid and vitamin deficiency.If nutritional intake is adapted to meet one's daily requirements and provide high quality protein and ample vitamins and minerals, it is possible to increase the nerves' ability to withstand stress and improve one's physical and emotional well-being.
