Depression Research in European Society (DEPRES) study

Journal/Book: Int J Meth Psychiatr Res. 1996; 6: Baffins Lane, Chichester, W Sussex, England PO19 1UD. John Wiley & Sons Ltd. S33-S37.

Abstract: The Depression Research in European Society (DEPRES) study is a two-phase investigation of depression across six European countries. The first phase of the study (DEPRES I) screened for depression in the community using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview. The six-month prevalence of depression was 17%, and major depression was reported by 6.9% of subjects. The prevalence of major depression was higher in women than in men and declined with age beyond 54 years. Subjects with major depression lost 13 days of work due to illness in the preceding six months compared with 3 days for non-sufferers. A significant proportion (31%) had not consulted a healthcare professional about their symptoms. Overall, 59% of subjects with major depression received no drug therapy. In total, only around 18% of major depressives received antidepressant drugs. These findings have significant educational and training implications.
