Abstract: The article provides a review of German- and English-language research literature (1980-1992) on music therapy with psychiatric patients. Case studies and effect studies are examined to establish general criteria applied in empirical research. The focus was on the evaluation of patient information, treatment modalities and settings as well as validation of the therapy. Finally, ideas and suggestions for further research in music therapy are indicated.
