Parental receptions of the services available for pre-school hearing impaired children

Journal/Book: J Brit Assn Teach Deaf. 1996; 20: 50 Topsham Road, Exeter Bolton, England EX2 4NF. Royal School for the Deaf. 70-82.

Abstract: This article outlines some of the findings of research carried out by the author investigating parental perceptions of the information and support they and their hearing impaired children received. The aim was to develop a deeper understanding of the parents viewpoint, in order to inform the professionals who provide services for hearing impaired children and their families. The research was carried out within one local authority and involved semi-structured interviews with the parents of ten children. A number of issues were investigated, those discussed here are; the sources and form of information parents received, the accessibility of the different types of support services, co-ordination between different agencies and parental contact with other parents and voluntary organisations. Analysis of the parents responses indicated a high level of satisfaction with the support and information they received. Issues relating to the accessibility of, and the co-ordination between, some services were raised. Contact with other parents and voluntary organisations appeared to be important to only a minority of parents.
