The magic flute: Reflections on the inner life of Mozart

Journal/Book: Psychology. 1996; 33: C/O Dr. Casimir Kowalski, Ohio State Univ,, College Business, Columbus, OH 43210. Psychology. 1-10.

Abstract: The article's theses are that The Magic Flute represents: contradictory elements in Mozart's personality and his attempts to reconcile them; a substitution of preexisting female-oriented preoccupations by male-oriented perspectives; how he wished to be remembered, and the Kind of life he proposed to live if afforded any additional time. The emergence of this work, one of Mozart's last, seems also to illustrate the hypothesis that works appearing at the conclusion of an artist's life may bear the special burden of attempting to communicate something of an especially intimate nature previously undisclosed. When artists perceive their lives as ebbing, rue may witness urgent efforts to conclude incomplete tasks, to integrate disparate and conflicting personal qualities, and to imbue their lives with a significance previously unachieved.
