Pediatric evaluation of the child with developmental delay

Journal/Book: Child Adolesc Psychiatr Clin. 1996; 5: Independence Square West, Curtis Center, Ste 300, Philadelphia, PA 19106-3399. W B Saunders Co. 809.

Abstract: Children with behavioral or emotional difficulties are at increased risk to have an underlying or concomitant developmental disability. Children with developmental disabilities also have increased frequency of behavioral difficulties. Information about developmental progress, the medical and family histories, and the physical and neurologic examination findings provide clues for early identification of a developmental disability and the associated deficits that may have additional impact on the functioning of the child and family. Factors suggesting referral for additional medical investigation include loss of developmental milestones, lack of expected progress, severe mental retardation or pervasive developmental disorder without determined cause, and significant unexplained abnormalities on neurologic examination.
