Abstract: Auditory Event Related Potentials were recorded during a two-tone discrimination task (oddball paradigm) in 50 schizophrenic patients compared to 47 healthy controls. Schizophrenic patients were rated with BPRS, SANS, SAPS and PANSS on the same day that ERP were recorded. In the patient group, ERPs components evoked by the non-target stimulus were characterized by longer latencies than controls. In response to the target stimulus. ERPs recorded in schizophrenics were characterized by smaller amplitudes of N2 and P3 components. Components latencies or amplitudes did not correlate with illness duration, length of hospitalization or treatment regimen. P3 latency correlated with age in both groups. The main finding of the study is that N2 and P3 latencies correlated with the severity of the disease and the intensity of negative schizophrenic symptomatology.
