Killing und Inflammation. Über die Apoptose- induzierende Potenz von VISCUM ALBUM L.- Extrakten

Abstract: To study the apoptosis-inducing properties of different mistletoeextracts, we investigated bacterially fermented aqueous extracts,unfermented aqueous extracts and pressed extracts of Viscum album L.(VAL). Among the toxic proteins of VAL, only the mistletoe lectins (ML)are potent inducers of the apoptotic cell death. Thus, one might suggesta correlation between ML content and killing capacity of VAL extracts.However, in cultured human lymphocytes it became obvious that theapoptosis-inducing capacities of VAL extracts differ in regard of thehost tree and production, but that they did not correlate with the MLcontent. In this article, the connection between VAL-inducedcytotoxicity in vitro and the inflammatory response towards thesubcutaneous application of VAL in vivo with the induction of complexinteracting events of the immune response will be discussed.
