Studies on the Morphology and Function of Meridian Lines with Reference to Neurogenic Inflammation by ICR Mouse

Journal/Book: Deutsche Zeitschrift für Akupunktur. 1996; 39/2: 29-38.

Abstract: In addition to exploring and understanding the location and structure of the meridian lines in mouse skin, the neurogenic inflammation along the meridian line was studied. A new idea on the nature of meridians was then put forward. Blood vessel stems, perivascular nerve network and mast cells are structural ingredients of meridian; red lines and wheal stripe are its functional expressions. We found that nerve fibers and mast cells taking part in the structure of meridians were substance P-immunoreactive; both of them could combine with each other to form neuromastocytic junction. An A. cutanea mammaria medialis running lengthwise beneath the skin was confirmed in human body as well as in mouse. A hypothesis of axon reflex relay action was proposed by us to explain the developmental mechanism of the red line along the meridian line. This mechanism may be availabale in transmission of other meridianal information. Meridians recorded by the chinese ancients were not entirely identified, Renmei and Dumei, for instance, were not found by the same way. Points located in the ventral and dorsal median line of mouse trunk had but mediate function between left and right.
