Suicide as an attempt at rescuing oneself. The function of suicide attempts in young people

Journal/Book: Syst Fam. 1995; 8: 175 Fifth Ave, New York, NY 10010. Springer Verlag. 243-254.

Abstract: Based on clinical experience that suicide is typically accompanied by an aversion to therapy, which makes the establishment of a therapeutically effective structural coupling more difficult, the hypothesis was developed that the function of suicidal behavior is the rehabilitation of structural coupling of the psychic system and the important social context system. Suicide treatment guarantees, at least temporarily, the social resonance that is necessary for the reproduction of the psychic system, in which at the same time, however, an independence from the social context is explicitly disputed. Such a functional analysis throws light on other psychopathologically relevant, functionally equivalent kinds of behavior and could guide therapy.
