Abstract: It is common to group the many aetiologically different varieties of dystonia into genetic (idiopathic) and symptomatic (secondary) forms. Peripheral trauma has only rarely been implicated as a causal factor. It is unclear at present whether a genetic predisposition has to be assumed in every case or if the trauma can cause a dystonic movement disorder in and of itself. It could be hypothesised that the peripheral trauma induces a change within the basal ganglia which in turn leads to the movement disorder. We present four patients who after having sustained a peripheral trauma developed a dystonic disorder at the locus of the injury with secondary generalisation in two cases.
