Images memory and dual coding.

Journal/Book: Annee Psychol. 1995; 95: Dept Des Revues, 14, Avenue du Bois-de-L'Epine, B.P. 90, 91003 Evry, France. Presses Univ France. 661-673.

Abstract: This article presents a synthesis of Paul Fraisse's contribution to dual coding theory. This theory explains the superiority of recall for pictures through an additional verbal coding. Although labeled by Alan Paivio, earlier work on dual coding was conducted by Ducharme and Fraisse (1965). This additional coding is suppressed by an acceleration of time (Paivio and Csapo, 1969) because the reading time is faster than the denomination time, on which Fraisse conducted several studies. The article ends with an application of the dual-coding paradigm in pharmacological research and by research in the educational field. Several presentation modalities (reading, listening, television...) are compared and the results show that for new knowledge, the picture alone (television without sound) is inefficient, which shows the inefficiency of images without verbal coding.
