Emotional processes of coping with disease in the early stages of acquired cerebral lesions

Journal/Book: Arts in Psychotherapy. 1995; 22: 21-30.

Abstract: Reviews the general aspects of adjusting to neurological disease and presents case reports concerning the use of music therapy with 3 male patients (aged 19, 22, and 47 yrs) experiencing severe cerebrocranial traumas after traffic accidents. The cases illustrate the use of the receptive-symbiotic method, the diagnostic use of sound-productive behavior, and the process of mourning. The author argues that therapy during the acute phase is necessary in adapting to an acquired cerebral lesion disease. Jochims also suggests that it is possible to establish contact with the inner self of the cerebral patient via a preverbal medium remaining on a concretely active level and to achieve emotional coping with disease even if the cognitive faculties are restricted.
